Day 3: Antenna Secrets for Maximum SDS100 Range
Hey there!
You're three days in, and I hope you're already picking up some incredible traffic on your SDS100. Today's tip is HUGE – and it can literally double your scanning range.
Quick Tip #3: Antenna Upgrades That Actually Work
The stock antenna that comes with the SDS100 is... okay. But you didn't spend $650+ on this scanner to get "okay" performance, right?
Here's what actually makes a difference:
For Home/Base Station Use: • Discone antenna (25-1300 MHz coverage) mounted as HIGH as possible • Diamond D130J or D3000N are popular choices • Use quality coax (LMR-400 or RG-8X) to minimize signal loss • Run the cable as short as practically possible
For Mobile/Portable Use: • Upgrade to the Uniden ABPSK1 or Remtronix REM-820S • Both are tuned specifically for public safety frequencies • You'll notice clearer audio and better signal lock on weak transmissions
Quick Win: If you're scanning indoors, try moving near a window or even stepping outside. Digital signals (especially P25 Phase II) need a clearer path than old analog.
Ground plane matters: If you're using a mobile antenna indoors, lay it on a cookie sheet or metal tray. Seriously! This creates an artificial ground plane and can boost performance by 20-30%.
One subscriber wrote in saying he went from picking up 2 agencies to 11 agencies just by upgrading his antenna. That's the difference we're talking about.
Tomorrow: Advanced scanning techniques and using Close Call mode like a pro.
cheers, boy and a scanner
