Day 2: Mastering Trunked Radio Systems on Your SDS100

Hey again!

Hope you're already getting some great scans with those organized Favorites Lists from yesterday. Today, I want to tackle something that trips up a lot of new SDS100 owners: trunked radio systems.

Quick Tip #2: Understanding Trunking & Why It Matters

Most modern public safety agencies don't use simple frequencies anymore – they use trunked systems. Think of it like a smart phone system that automatically assigns conversations to available channels.

The SDS100 is a TRUE DIGITAL SCANNER, meaning it handles: • P25 Phase I & Phase II (most common for police/fire) • DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) • NXDN (less common but growing) • Motorola systems

Here's the game-changer: RadioReference.com is your best friend.

  1. Go to RadioReference.com and search your county

  2. Look for systems marked as "P25" or "Motorola"

  3. Use the "Download to scanner" feature or manually enter the system info

  4. Pay attention to TALKGROUPS – these are like channels within the system

Pro Tip: Enable "Avoid" on talkgroups you don't want (like utilities or data channels). This keeps your scanner focused on the action.

The SDS100's true digital reception means you'll hear crystal-clear audio – no more static or garbled transmissions like old analog scanners.

Tomorrow, I'll show you how to optimize your antenna setup for maximum range.

cheers, boy and a scanner
