Battery Life Hacks: Keep Your SDS100 Running All Day

Hey there!

One of the most common questions I get about the SDS100 is: "Why does my battery drain so fast?" Let's fix that today.

Understanding SDS100 Power Consumption

The SDS100 uses a rechargeable Li-Ion battery (3350 mAh). Under normal scanning, you should get 8-10 hours. If you're getting less, here's why – and how to fix it.

Battery Life Killers:

  1. Backlight on Full Blast • Menu > Settings > Backlight • Set to "Key press" or "Squelch break" • Reduce brightness to 50% (still perfectly readable) • This ALONE can add 2-3 hours of runtime

  2. GPS Enabled When Not Needed • GPS drains battery significantly • Only enable for mobile use (location-based scanning) • Turn OFF for home/base station use • Menu > Settings > GPS > Off

  3. Wi-Fi Left On • The SDS100 has built-in Wi-Fi for streaming • If you're not using it, turn it OFF • Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi > Disable

  4. Close Call Always Active • Close Call constantly scans for signals • Use priority mode or disable when not needed

Power-Saving Best Practices:

• Use "Battery Saver" mode (Menu > Settings > Power Save) • Reduce delay times (less waiting = less power) • Use rechargeable batteries in good condition • Keep firmware updated (improvements include battery optimization)

Upgrade Your Battery Game:

  1. Spare Batteries • Get a genuine Uniden BP-SC1 spare battery ($40-50) • Keep one charged and ready • Swap takes 30 seconds

  2. External Battery Pack • Any USB-C power bank works • 10,000 mAh pack = 2-3 full charges • Perfect for long events or emergencies

  3. 12V Car Adapter • Uniden BC-CUSB cigarette lighter adapter • Runs scanner without draining battery • Essential for mobile scanning

Pro Tip: Your battery's lifespan is about 500 charge cycles. If your scanner is 2+ years old and battery life has tanked, it might be time for a replacement battery.

With these tweaks, you should easily hit 10-12 hours of scanning time!

cheers, boy and a scanner
